LOST PILOTS - Introduction

The compilation of Missing Air Crew Reports (MACR's) did not give comprehensive nor detailed information about the total pilot casualties of the 1st Fighter Group during WWII. John Mullins' history of the 1st FG, "An Escort of P-38's" was searched for notation of casualties that had not been caught by the MACR system. Two websites that memorialize lost WWII servicemen were also searched. Searches by military unit and by name or serial number led to identification of more individuals and in many cases, their determined fate and gravesites or memorial plaques. The two websites are:

www.wwiimemorial.com.registry

www.abmc.gov

The WWII memorial site gives notation as to the fate of the individuals as determined by the War Department and also provides links to the American Battle Monuments Comission (ABMC) site to determine the burial or memorial plaque sites for the individuals.
The 'STATUS' (i.e. the fate) of the individuals as recorded in the memorial registry is given in abbreviated notation. The definition of the STATUS notations are as follows:
M = Missing in action
KIA = Killed in action
FOD = Finding of death (as determined by research w/o actual posession of remains)
DOI = Died of injuries in battle
DOW = Died of wounds in battle, but later in the line of duty
DNB = Died of non-battle causes
RTD = Returned to unit (i.e. rescued or escaped)
POW = Prisoner of war
ACC = Non-combat accident

The ABMC cemetery sites are denoted by two letter codings as follows:

AR = Ardennes @ Neupre, Belgium
CA = Carthage, Tunisia
FL = Florence, Italy
LO = Lorraine, France
NA =North Africa @ Carthage, Tunisia
RH =Rhone, France
SR = Sicily-Rome Italy
